Patch the Canvas

A well-placed patch can give everyday workwear another season. Start with the fabric around the tear.

01

Find sound fabric

Inspect beyond the visible hole. If the surrounding canvas is brittle or worn thin, a small patch will simply pull away with it. Choose compatible fabric and extend the patch into sound material on every side. This repair is for ordinary clothing and bags, not climbing gear, protective equipment, or anything whose failure could injure someone.

02

Keep the stitches steady

Fold or finish the patch edges to limit fraying, then pin or baste it in place. Use a needle and thread suited to the fabric, with a thimble where needed. Work slowly through thick layers and keep stitch spacing consistent. Avoid pulling so hard that the cloth puckers. A second line of stitching can help distribute wear when the material allows it.

03

Check it in use

Flex the repaired area and inspect both sides before wearing it. Waterproof finishes need a compatible treatment recommended by the item’s maker; an ordinary stitch repair does not restore a certified barrier. Check the patch after washing and after hard use. Catch a loose stitch early. A visible repair that holds is worth more than a tidy one that tears out.

Know the limits. Follow equipment instructions and seek qualified help when a job calls for it.
